ICYMI: 'Building the Future'
Today, the Center for American Progress hosted a half-day summit on housing policy, "Building the Future: Innovative Solutions to the U.S. Housing Crisis." Elected officials, advocates, and policy experts discussed bold policy ideas for building more housing of all types—especially sustainable, transit-accessible, and affordable housing.
The need for action is urgent. America is facing a housing affordability crisis. Nearly half of all rental households spend more than 30 percent of their income on rent, making them cost burdened. The lack of affordable rental housing and starter homes for first-time buyers makes it harder to save for the future and access economic opportunity.
To solve the U.S. housing crisis, the path ahead must dramatically boost the supply of housing through policies that will spur building—by reforming local zoning regulations and adopting innovative financing opportunities—and do so in a way that fosters communities in which Americans want to live, work, and gather.
